Channel 4 EStings

TV Idents
Channel 4 Estings
What is an Ident/Esting?
A TV ident is a sequence (usually only ten seconds long) used by channels such as E4, BBC 1 & 2, Comedy Central and Viva. Due to an increase of channels and the sharing of TV programmes it’s sometimes difficult for the audience to tell what channel they are watching, an idents purpose is to in a way advertise the channel.
An Esting is the E4 version of an ident, in order for E4 to save money they created the Estings competition in which creative individuals could submit their individual ident for the channel, This was a win/win situation for everyone as the winners of the competition got their work put on the TV for everyone to see and E4 got free advertisements for their channel.
With creating the Esting competition E4 have been very tricky, with the viewers sending in their individual Estings, E4 saved a lot on their advertising budget plus it also gives the impression that E4 is listening to its audience and they care about their opinions. The Estings can also be used as a way of free market research, a way to know what is popular with their current target audience and put it on their channel gaining more views.
Animation Project
For my animation project I am going to create a channel 4 Esting that will be entered into next year’s competition. Estings are aimed at creative young adults (mid teens to early thirties), inspiring them to create short idents for E4.
There a three rules to entering the E4 Estings competition;
·         The ident must contain the E4 somewhere.
·         No commercial music can be used (Music is available from the E4 website).
·         Has to be 10 seconds long.
In order for my Esting to link into my animation course, it is going to be stop motion and the best way to create a stop motion animation (Esting) would be to use either clay or plasticine. To create a stop motion animation I will need a camera (digital) and a computer with film editing software; for example Adobe Premier or Sony Vegas.

In order to get inspiration for my own Esting, I have chosen four of my favourite stop motion Estings:

Although this esting looks simple it is actually quite complex as it uses more than one angle and the movement of multiple objects. The purpose of the ident is clearly shown within the Esting, with the E4 logo in the centre.

Although this is not strictly a stop motion animation due to the amount of computer animation used, a lot of it was created using stop motion. An example being the movement of the bedding and the teddy bear which is clearly stop motion.
